Azithromycin is a macrolide antibiotic that binds to the P-50 subunit of the bacterial ribosome in the cytosol, preventing the binding of ATP and causing the energy required for peptide bond formation to be unavailable. This terminates peptide elongation and protein synthesis, leading the bacterial cell to die. It is effective against intracellular bacteria and is commonly used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. Due to its long half-life, it only needs to be ingested less frequently compared to other antibiotics. It is normally used as a second-line antibiotic when initial treatments have failed.
